TOPIC INFORMAL NEWSLETTER No 14, 25 February 2003

Website: http://www.topic-folk-club.org.uk Log On Now!

Greetings one and all.

FIRST, NEWS OF WHAT’S COMING UP

Feb 27 Steve Tilston Ex-Fairport guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Singer-songwriter is a much abused term, but in Steve we find that rare combination, a first class writer and a superb tunesmith - a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who excels in each area. You’ll have heard someone trying to cover his “Slipjigs and Reels” so now come and hear it as the writer intended.

Apologies; but our previously-billed Featured Support artist Darren Poyzer finds he has a more lucrative booking elsewhere, and we can’t blame him for that. All the more room for Floor Singers. Come on down. And see later for Darren’s rebooked spot in March.

March 6 Singers and Musicians Theme: The Sea, ships, water, boats, lakes, wettage

March 13 Tim Moon local radio broadcaster who is well-known in local radio circles for his interviews of folk musicians (and others) on BCB. But he is a folk-musician in his own right, and now we are pleased to welcome him in public, playing his own material. A larger than life character, with costumes and hats to match . . .

March 20 Jon Harvison well known local singer/songwriter, with another big voice. He has several CDs out, including the acclaimed “Lonely as Tim Moon. We expect to have Featured support from Karl Dallas: singer, writer, performer and activist now in his 50th year of live performance: though that assumes he is back in one piece (or peace) from Iraq see below. But in any case, we have additional / replacement featured support from Darren Poyzer, zany Mancunian entertainer, relocated from February. A welcome return to MC duties for Rahel Guzelian, now sufficiently recovered from her operation.

March 27 Singers and Musicians. Theme: Ireland and anything Irish, it being close to St Patrick’s day. As if there won’t be enough of that going on in the Melborn!

And onwards:

April 3 Paul Tiernan Featured support: Martin Sumpton
April 10 Vin Garbutt (tickets available NOW, ring Bfd 883412)
April 24 Bill Jones and Sarah Wright Featured support The Durberville Vs

May 8 Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies Featured Support: Sue Burgess
May 22 Maggie Boyle

June 5 Instruments of Torture
June 19 The Lost Boys

July 3 Roger Sutcliffe
July 17 Tom Napper and Tom Bliss
July 24 Singers and Musicians (till Sept 4)

More details of all of these to follow nearer the time, but you can always check out their websites now all are accessible via the Topic website: www.topic-folk-club.org.uk

KARL DALLAS

As many will know, Karl has now successfully reached Baghdad, and is one of the many intrepid individuals from all over the world who have made themselves available to act as voluntary Human Shields. They are taking up positions in or near civilian “targets” electricity and water supply centres for example challenging the belligerent powers to bomb these soft targets in ways that do so much harm to the civilian population. I am sure we all wish him well. Of course, he may be able to read this in some downtown Baghdad Internet Café! Donations to support his mission (which he is financing himself) can be made I’ll let anyone know the details by return.

AND WHAT YOU’VE MISSED

A couple of very pleasant evenings recently. Good audience for Gordon Tyrrall, who was his usual self-effacing self, but working particularly well on the flute this time. He was feature-supported by Dave Kidman who provided an excellent couple of sets.

A slightly thinner audience, sadly, for Geoff Higginbottom, who was his usual far-from-self-effacing self, and had us all chorussing. This evening was further enlivened by Chris Manners dropping in for a floor spot he and Geoff go back a long way, it seems.

ODD SPOTS

It isn’t just Rahel Guzelian that has returned to MC duties. We are pleased to see Adam Russell back with us after his period of seclusion up the Dales with van problems. Dave Kidman did a guest MC spot recently, and we have also recruited Joy Leach to the ranks. Even Ian Gobbi promises to MC the odd evening if he remembers.

That’ll do for now. See you all soon! Well, not for a bit actually. Not another heart op? No, a swing through the major cities of China … and yes, I do hope to return with yet another guitar you’ll just have to wait and see what colour this time!
