TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

NEWSLETTER No 35 November 2004

Greetings and a brief introduction to the forthcoming month‚s goodies:

Nov 4 Julie Ellison. Guitarist of note and singer/songwriter considerable ability. She came to a Singers' Night, then did a Featured Support, and now here she is with a full booking. Her guitar style has its roots in ragtime, and her voice has been compared with Roberta Flack's and Joni Mitchell's. Now working solo, she has been involved with various groups, including the acoustic band Fruition, the rock band Scooch!, the theatrical trio Hell's Belles and The Pete Palmer Country Band. "Julie is a terrific guitar player and she also writes great songs. She shared the stage with me at the South Shields guitar festival and the discerning audience loved her. She stormed it!" - Ralph McTell

Featured Support tonight is Lyte Flyte, who are Mark Almond and Ian Lunn from Lancashire; playing folk, blues and bluegrass on fiddle, guitar and banjo.

Nov 11 Kimber's Men. Harmony singing, mostly of sea shanties and other maritime fare (nautical ballads and broadsides) as befits an outfit based in the well-known seaport of Halifax. Plenty of choruses to join in with, and much sturdy singing (and amiable banter) amongst the crew. This comprises Neil Kimber (Bosun), John Bromley (Ship's Cook), Roger Hepworth (Cabin Boy), and Joe Stead (Ship's Doctor).

No featured support booked as I go to press, but I expect someone will volunteer on receipt of this Newsletter! And if not, all the more space for our Quality Floorsingers.

Nov 18 Annual General Meeting. We are a properly-constituted Club with paid-up membership; so this will be a members-only event. If you are a member, do come down and join in the perennial debates about how to get more people coming regularly on Thursdays; as well as approving the Accounts and Committee. When we've finished debating all that, there'll be an unthemed singaround.

Nov 25 Darren Poyzer. One of Manchester's finest. Great bloke. Composer and performer of personal, witty, moving and original songs who also finds time to promote gigs and events and happenings over a wider area. This is bound to be an evening of enormous fun and originality. Once again, no featured support booked as yet, as Damien Ryan, who had been booked, has suddenly found he is going to be in Ireland.

AND ONWARDS: (More in the next Newsletter). Or via the website www.topic-folk-club.org.uk

SWARBAID Most readers will no doubt be aware both of Dave Swarbrick's on-going medical problems; and also of the efforts Quality Musicians up and down the country are putting into a whole series of benefit gigs to help his financial situation. Full details are available via the website www.swarbaid.org.uk <http://www.swarbaid.org.uk/> (or just type swarbaid into Google); but space here to say that the most local Yorkshire ones will be:

Do give your support to this towering doyen of the folk scene. We shall also have a Swarbaid collection at the Topic AGM on November 18.

VIN GARBUTT You'll note he is appearing as part of Swarbaid; but you'll want to catch him live at the Topic before that December 9, if you've skipped to the bottom. Tickets can be reserved by emailing this Newsletter. Prices will be 8 for non-members (a contractual requirement) but he's well well worth it; and we may even sell out!

AN APOLOGY to several recipients of this Newsletter, that recent Life Events and Travels have caused me to fall a trifle behind with bookings; and especially the consideration of demo CDs kindly sent to me. I should be getting down to it again soon.

See you all some Thursday at the Melborn (a real ale pub) at one of the above events. 8.30 start. Be there by then if you want to perform a floor spot, which are still available every night even where there is a Featured Support artist booked. No smoking in the club room.

SUPPLEMENT Nov 11 2004

NEWSLETTER No 35a November 2004

Greetings and apologies for invading your inbox so soon after the last one:

BUT it appears there were some errors on the Swarbaid information I included with the last letter, and I have been asked to clarify the misleading dates. Apparently the official Swarbaid website (from which I cut and pasted, to avoid any chance of retyping errors ∑ ) was also wrong. The definitive dates of Swarbaid gigs in the North appear below:

However, while I am on, if you are reading this on the day I send it (Thursday 11 November) remember tonight it is Kimber‚s Men (as advertised) who will now be feature-supported by Shady Coves - Terry Cook and Tony Haygarth, playing guitar, frailing old tymey banjo, and slide guitar.

Thursday 25 November is Darren Poyzer (as advertised) who will now be feature-supported by Steve O‚Donoghue a Manchester-based singer /songwriter of "cracking songs full of love, hope and rejection".
