TOPIC FOLK CLUB Newsletter 55 - July 2006

Greetings:  and welcome to the early-July issue.

July 6        Alistair Russell and Chris Parkinson.
All the auguries are that this will be a great evening, as Alistair says goodbye to Yorkshire after two decades in our region.  At the time of writing, tickets are still available, and we hope to get everyone in; but it may be advisable to come down relatively early to ensure you pick up your ticket.  We have had a finite number printed, at very close to our expected capacity.    Featured Support will come from
Dark Horse, comprising Highland Piper Cameron Edgar and guitarist Mark Mawby.

July 13      The Amazing Mr Smith.   Wit and musicianship in equal measure, as Mr Smith illustrates his music with a wealth of props and costumes.   See him play Duelling Banjos on two banjos simultaneously.  Or having the whole audience humming the Dambusters March wearing WW2 goggles.    Expect more than a nod towards traditional music hall, and for a full evening’s entertainment.   Featured Support comes from Ed McGurk, another member of Bandersnatch; who provided Featured Support for Pete Abbott earlier in the year.  Ed sings and accompanies himself on guitar, whistles and mandolin.

July 20      Entropy and Robin and Ben.
A great Double Header event featuring some of the region’s best young up and coming performers.   Entropy are a Rock/Folk band featuring Hannah and Clair, two exciting young performers on guitar and fiddles, joined by Chris and Luke on percussion and lead guitar.  They have been likened to early Steeleye Span -
come and see if you agree.   Ben and Robin are a singing and guitar duo from just the other side of the Pennines, and can sometimes be seen at Skipton Folk Club.  They provided a very thoughtful featured support slot a couple of years ago, and are welcome back.

July 27      Robb Johnson.
Finish off the season with a bang with one of the liveliest and committed singer/songwriters in the business.   Plenty of political and social comment; but not exclusively.    Robb is a genuine performer of real class.    Featured Support comes from an energetic (and again relatively youthful) acoustic indie/rock/folk Bury-based band called
Molly Bloom.  Expect some surprises.

Tickets are now on sale at Club Nights for the first few concerts in our 50th Anniversary Season, including the Vin Garbutt gig on 13 September.

As are T-shirts.   50th anniversary T-shirts, any colour you like so long as it’s black: medium or XL, handsome design and a list of all the Topic’s venues through its 50 year history.  Available at club nights (or at a pinch by post) for a very reasonable 7.50.

See you all some Thursday at the C ock and Bottle at one of the above events.  8.30 start (and we are getting better at starting almost on time).  Be there by then if you want to perform a floor spot, which are still available every night even where there is a Featured Support artist booked.  No smoking in the club room.
