Topic Newsletter Archive

TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX - a wheelchair-friendly venue
Newsletter No. 88 - April 2009

Thank you to everyone who has been helping to spread the word that Topic is a worthwhile way to spend a Thursday evening, whether it be for an informal Singers & Musicians night or one of the many and varied guest nights. There are some very kind shop-keepers and cafe proprietors in the area who have been happy to display posters and flyers, which always helps. If you are new to this newsletter, or haven't yet been to the Topic in its current venue, hope you'll find something below to tempt you.

7th May
Singers and Musicians.
You'll be welcome to come and sing, play or listen (and buy a raffle ticket!). It's a friendly informal evening enjoyed by all ages. Free entry.

14th May
Kieran Halpin.
Kieran has been a regular and popular guest at the Topic over the years. He's a prolific writer of some stunning songs and engaging live performer. In the words of Folk Roots: „Halpin, more than most, has a voice that sells the songs. It's unusual for a contemporary songwriter to sound so Irish (Christy Moore apart) and it's rare for anyone to sound so hard. This has the effect of accentuating all the emotions."

Kieran releases his 19th album this year, featuring ten new songs including one he has written for his friend John Wright - So Long John. 5/6

21st May
Fyrish.
Scottish duo Marjorie Paterson and Dave Cowan bring us more of their well-crafted mixture of traditional and contemporary songs, having charmed Topic audiences in the past with their Featured Support and Double Header spots. Marjorie is a cello player, originally from the Black Isle, who grew up in a musical family and who has a natural gift for music and harmony and loves to play a wide range of styles. Dave is a singer and guitar player from Glasgow who has been singing traditional and contemporary folk songs for many years. He has a relaxed, easy style and a mellow voice. 5/6

28th May
Steve Turner.
You may remember Steve Turner's many appearances at the Topic during the 1980s, playing concertina and singing traditional songs. Now here he is, back on the folk scene after a thirteen year break (in which he built up a violin retailing business). Steve's return to the scene was warmly welcomed to the extent that he was asked to make a new album, The Whirligig of Time, which was recorded with Ollie Knight and includes guests like Martin Carthy, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, Kevin Brown and others. 5/6

4th June
Singers and Musicians
. Everyone welcome as always, whether to sing, play, join in choruses or just listen. Free entry.

11th June
Gareth Davies-Jones.
Returning for a full evening after an excellent Double Header performance early last year, Gareth modestly describes himself as "...a singer, guitarist, lyric loving, protest type activist with a few songs to boot", but there are many who have much more to say in his praise, with his melodic and gently persuasive style. For example, here's a quote from Rock & Reel magazine which sums him up well "...rich and soulful vocals, his fine ear for melody, wide-ranging musical palette......it‚s clear Davies-Jones is a prodigious talent.‰ 5/6

And coming later:
June: Kimber's Men, Amy Atkinson & Midnight Special/Ian McKone
July: Roger Sutcliffe, Vin Garbutt, Anna Shannon /Jon Brindley, Andy Hill/Five & Dimers, Robb Johnson
