TOPIC FOLK CLUB

Newsletter No. 93 - November 2009

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX - a wheelchair-friendly venue

Remember, remember - there are two singers nights this month (well, one-and-a half really). The first one is described just below. Have a look further down the page to find out where the second one is to be held. There are also two nicely contrasting guest nights, with artists perhaps not familiar to you, but well worth being inquisitive about. Hope to see you there.

5th November
Raise Your Banners Songwriting Competition Final AND Singers & Musicians night
. This will be a bit different from most evenings at the Topic. Please come along and help to make it a good one. During the first half of the evening you will be able to hear performances of the four shortlisted songs. After judges have made their decision the winner will be invited to perform his or her song again. The remainder of the evening will be open to any singers and musicians who would like to perform, which will include some of the entants who didn't make it to the final. So bring your instruments and have your voices ready. If you can come up with a song with a political theme, so much the better. PLEASE NOTE the evening is set to start at 8:15pm. Entry is free.

12th November
Marian Bradfield
. Perhaps some members of the Irish club will be tempted to come and listen to Marian who has been voted one of Ireland's top ten female singers and described as one of Ireland's hidden musical treasures. Based in Donegal, Marian has three solo albums and one live album to her name and has appeared on several compilations including Celtic Woman 1 & 2. A newcomer to the Topic, so no doubt many people will come out of curiosity, but she also has admirers here. If you know any of them please remind them of her Topic date. 5/6

19th November
Broom Bezzums
. An accomplished and exuberant duo comprising singing fiddler Andrew Cadie (who also plays Northumbrian pipes and guitar) and singer Mark Bloomer who plays flute, mandolin and guitar. It's the first time we've had them as guests at the Topic, so an extra reason to come and check them out. You'll experience a whirlwind of strong musical performances and engaging, cheeky off-the-cuff patter as they present their repertoire of critically-acclaimed original compositions, northern English folk songs and instrumentals. 5/6

26th November
Singers & Musicians night
PLEASE NOTE: The Irish Club on this day only is otherwise engaged, therefore, just for this evening we'll be popping across the road to the The New Beehive Inn, where you will be met with the usual Topic welcome and where your songs and/or tunes will be intently listened to in a friendly and informal setting. Free Entry. 8.15pm start.

3rd December
Gwyneth Keen & Scarlett Bazaar
. If you came to see charismatic Welsh band Celtish at the Topic last year you will certainly remember stunning vocalist Gwyneth Keen, a talented and powerful singer hailing from the mountains of North Wales. Her repertoire is extremely varied, ranging from traditional songs in both Welsh and English, songs from the pens of artists such as Natalie Merchant and Nick Drake, and songs she has written herself. Accompanying Gwyneth will be Becky Dellow on Electric Fiddle/vocals and Elizabeth Casey on piano. 5/6

10th December
George Papavgeris
. "The best thing to happen to UK song writing for many a year" says Harvey Andrews of this prolific, personable and compelling songwriter who sings his unique songs with clarity and passion. George enthralled the Topic audience at his last visit in 2007 so we're pleased to be having him back again. "Few have written so many songs that demand your full attention and then insist, in the finest of ways, on staying with you forever."- Graham Searle

And coming later...

December: Scarlet Heights

January: Paula Ryan, Sarah Dean, Brian Peters, Fiona Katie Roberts

AGM - Notice to Topic members

Don't forget this year's Annual General Meeting will be held at the Irish Club on Monday 16th November at 8.30pm.

Hope to see you sometime at the Topic. Non-members are welcome, but if you would like to join you may do so any Thursday evening at the club. Usually 5 but as it's getting towards the end of the year we can offer a reduced membership fee to take you up to the 31st December this year if you wish. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket price shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to attend the AGM and put your views forward, or even to become involved in the running of the club (not compulsory).

Everyone is welcome every Thursday at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB. 8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm)

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please get there by 8.15pm if you‚d like a slot - it helps the MC to plan the evening.
