TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX a wheelchair-friendly venue
Newsletter No 85 - February 2009

January at the Topic was a very promising start to the New Year. Thanks to all of you (artists included) who have been turning up to these excellent evenings of entertainment and culture, and also to those who have helped publicise the events by emailing friends, distributing flyers, putting up posters and so on. Have a look at what February has to offer and let's see if we can keep up the momentum!

5th February
Singers and musicians.
Start the month with a relaxed, informal evening of music and song where you'll be welcome to perform or to be part of the audience. It's free to come in, but there'll probably be a raffle.

12th February
Janet Russell. A long overdue return visit to the Topic. Well-known locally and further afield for her work with community singing groups and workshops, as well as her concerts. Janet is an exceptional singer-songwriter who first made a name for herself on the folk scene in the 1980s and is also widely known for her skill in interpreting Scottish traditional material. The Guardian says: „The most striking feature of Janet Russell‚s arresting voice is a lower register whose distinctive power and edge make dramatic listening. 5/6

19th February
Landermason. Duo Fiona Lander and Paul Mason, from Northumberland, combine both traditional and contemporary folk with jazz and other styles in their beautiful and striking arrangements. Both sing, with Fiona likely to be playing piano, whistles, saxes, clarinet and recorder and Paul on guitar. The pair recently made the top 3 in the FATEA Awards 2008, Band/duo of the Year 2008 category. 5/6

26th February
Stanley Accrington. If you already know him you won't need to read this. So, for the benefit of newcomers to the Accrington experience... hard to fit him into any sort of mould. Serious fun, with lots of humorously serious songs, unpredictable in content, but consistent in quality. Although known for his zaniness and his use of props which can sometimes involve the audience, he is above all an excellent songwriter and performer. 5/6

5th March
Singers and musicians. Again, you'll be welcome to take part or to listen to others taking part. Free.

12th March
Gina Le Faux. One of the great fiddle players on the British folk/roots music scene. Gina also plays Viola and Mandolin and she is an exceptional singer and interpreter of songs old and new. A recent performance was described as „White Soul‰ and her guitar playing as „spellbinding‰. Gina's latest CD is due to be released this spring. The album features many of her own songs plus some traditional songs and songs from other modern writers and a couple of her own tunes. Its producer is Martin Simpson who features on slide guitar. The album also includes Andy Cutting, Andy Seward and Hugh Bradley. 5/6 (entry ˆ not the album!)

And coming soon:

March: Phoenix (Irish night), Bernie Parry

April: Marie Little, Acoustica, Gerry McNeice, Rosie Doonan, The Durbervilles

Some sad news
Sadly it was reported in Tyke Taverner magazine that Peter Fell, The landlord of the Topic's former venue, the Cock & Bottle, died recently after a fall. We'll remember him for his enthusiastic welcome when the Topic took up residence there. The Topic would like to offer condolences to his family and friends.

You don't have to be a member to come to the Topic, but if you would like to join you may do so any Thursday evening at the club. 5 pays your membership up to 31st December 2009 and entitles you to the usual 1 reduction on guest nights.

Everyone is welcome every Thursday at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB. 8.30pm start.

Floor singers always welcome, especially in the first half. Please get there by 8.15pm if you‚d like a slot.
