Newsletter No. 95 - January 2010

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX - a wheelchair-friendly venue

Happy New Year! Hope it's a good one. To help you on your way to a great year, the Topic has an interesting and high quality progamme ahead. It only remains for all of you out there to come down, take your seats and allow yourselves to be enthralled and entertained. Here's a reminder of how we're starting the year...

7th January
Singers & Musicians.
Back in the Irish club again. Everyone is welcome to come and take a turn to sing/play/listen in a relaxed and informal setting. Entry is free.

14th January
Double Header
. Two talented women who have previously appeared at the Topic as part of a capella group Soundsphere. Now a chance to hear the contrasting individual styles of both in one evening. Both are from the York area. Paula Ryan is a singer songwriter influenced by her Irish Gaelic roots, also infusing into her sound some funky rhythms and unusual instruments of music from other cultures. Sarah Dean, sings her own highly individual songs accompanied by harp which blends pleasingly with her beautiful vocals. Her performances are delivered with warmth and sensitivity and often punctuated with amusing anecdotes. 5/6

21st January
Brian Peters
. Brian is one of the country‚s best anglo-concertina and melodeon players, and internationally-known as a singer of traditional ballads. Alongside classic traditional songs and lively English dance tunes, you can expect to hear newer songs, his own instrumental compositions, and wild squeezebox excursions into ragtime or blues. All that, along with his lively and witty stage presence, makes for an uplifting and entertaining evening. 5/6

28th January
Fiona Katie Roberts
. Highly regarded extraordinary harpist who plays extraordinary harps, which she designs and makes herself. You can expect to hear music from around the world, including many Celtic tunes, played in her own individual style, interspersed with interesting anecdotes and historical snippets about harps and harpists. One of her trademarks is her own highly original „percussion section‰ which she brings into play using rings on her fingers and bells on her feet. 5/6

4th February
Singers & Musicians
. Another opportunity to try out those new songs and tunes or revisit older ones in a friendly informal atmosphere. You'll also be welcome just to come and listen or perhaps join in a chorus or two. Free entry.

11th February
Ray Hearne
. Even if the name does not seem immediately familiar to you, there's a good chance you'll have heard some of Ray Hearne's songs before. Topic favourite Roy Bailey is known for singing his Calling Joe Hill, Song For David and Rother Sing A Don Song. But these are only a few from this fine songwriter and singer and here is a rare chance to hear the wealth he has to offer. Ray is a key driving force in the No Masters Co-operative and he works in the true song-making tradition, carrying traditional themes and forms into new works, describing his songs as "partisan comments on culture and tradition". 5/6

And coming later...

February: Tom Leary & PJ Wright, Zoox
March: Anthony John Clarke, LightGarden (David Moss & Masha Kaestner), Tattie Jam
