Newsletter No. 100 - June 2010

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX - a wheelchair-friendly venue

Coming up to half-way through the year with this hundredth edition newsletter and another month of outstanding guests, along with a Singers & Musicians night to which the whole of Bradford has been invited. See you there!

3rd June
Rubus - A fairly new band that combines the talents of Emily Portman (voice & concertina, formerly of The Devil's Interval), Christi Andropolis (fiddle, viola & voice) and David Newey (guitar). With a unique repertoire rooted in the more obscure songs and ballads of the English folk tradition, Rubus also explore new ground with original songs, combining Emilyʼs striking vocals with exceptional finger style guitar, and responsive fiddle. Their debut album Nine Witch Knots is quickly gaining them attention, having already received airplay on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 3ʼs Late Junction as well as topping the fRoots magazine October ‘08 playlist. 5/6

10th June
MelaMatik Singers & Musicians. We're pleased to be included in Bradford's MelaMatik festival this year. MelaMatik is the fringe festival of the well-known Bradford Mela and aims to incorporate the diverse genres of music to be found in venues all over Bradford and some of its surrounding areas. As usual everyone is welcome to come along and take a turn at singing or playing an acoustic instrument, or both. Please come and help make this a worthy event. Bring your friends. We'll aim to start at 8.15pm. Free entry. For more info about MelaMatik events please see: www.myspace.com/melamatik

17th June
Ewan McLennan - It's great to be having Ewan back after his first Topic visit on a Double Header evening last year, with his clear strong voice, accomplished guitar playing and well-chosen songs delivered with sensitivity. He has been compared to the likes of Dick Gaughan and Archie Fisher, but with a style all his own. You can expect traditional ballads sung unaccompanied, dance tunes or melancholic airs arranged for the guitar, as well as his own contemporary song writing that follows firmly in the folk tradition. Having grown up in Scotland, Scottish songs and tunes naturally form a large part of his repertoire. However, his singing and playing around Yorkshire (where he has lived for the last few years), his study of the songs of the working class movement in Britain and America, and his love of Irish traditional singing all ensure that the origins and focus of his songs are varied. 5/6

24th June
Larry Hanks - It's exciting to be welcoming, for the first time to the Topic, Larry Hanks on tour from the USA. For decades he has been delighting audiences with his rough-hewn bass vocals, tastefully spare 6 and 12-string guitar accompaniments, and virtuosic Jew's Harp playing. Listeners respond warmly to his easy, unpretentious mannerisms, and a loving approach to the repertoire he painstakingly selects to reflect the many facets of the human condition. Larry has performed with hundreds of musicians throughout his long career including: Gordon Bok, Jody Stecher, Mike Seeger, Utah Phillips, Michael Cooney, Geoff Muldaur, Malvina Reynolds, Roger Perkins, Janis Joplin, Fred Holstein, Mike Marker, and Kenny Hall, to name a few. 5/6

1st July
Roger Sutcliffe - It's coming up to that time of the year again when we're visited by this ever popular musician, most well-known for his blues guitar playing (on a selection of fine instruments) and songs, his entertaining banter and stories. This is always a good night so come along and enjoy it. 5/6

8th July

And coming later...
