TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX
An accessible venue

Newsletter No. 125 – October  2012

Hello again,

After the September deluge, what talent will be flooding into the Topic in October when Autumn really arrives? Come and check it out for yourselves.

4th October
Singers and Musicians

Come down and do something, or just listen to someone else doing something. 8.15pm start. Free entry

11th October
David Gibb & Elly Lucas

An exciting young duo from Derbyshire who play a mixture of original and reworked traditional folk material. Guitars, melodeon, fiddle, viola and vocals guarantee an entertaining night with these BBC Young Folk Awards finalists in 2011. 5/6

18th October
Fiona Katie-Roberts and Eddie Lawler

Two familiar but very different local musicians come together for a quality double-header. Fiona-Katie is not only a superb exponent of her instrument, the triple harp, she designs and builds her own. She will no doubt be including anecdotes about harps, harpists and the music she plays (from all parts of the world)  between tunes, while her long-time friend and collaborator, Eddie Lawler will be telling stories in song: wit and wisdom about local places and issues which will provide not only a smile, but food for thought. 5/6

25th October
Alistair Russell

Ex-Battlefield Band member who has now been performing for over 40 years, Alistair returns to the Topic, where he played on his last night before leaving Yorkshire for a spell down south. Now back and re-established in West Yorkshire, not only as a performer but with his recording studio as well, we are pleased to welcome him back to our club for another memorable evening. 5/6

Special Singers and Musicians night
A reminder that the Singers and Musicians night on 1st November will take the form of a tribute night to the Topic's founder, Alex Eaton, who passed away last year. His widow, Louise, and other members of Alex's family will be coming along, so the evening will include reflections on Alex's life and music.

We would like as many people as possible with any interest in the Topic to come along on this night to help celebrate the continuing existence of what Alex started so long ago. The more people who are there, the more it will be a tribute to Alex, who was a great one for having lots of people around making music.

Also in November: Soundsphere, Roger Wilson, Steve Tilston, Gerry McNeice Band.

Calling all artistic folk

Can anyone offer any ideas or advice about designing a backdrop for the stage for Topic nights? If so please get in touch.

Non-Topic News:

There will be a performance of the Demon Barbers' highly acclaimed show "The Lock In" at the Carriageworks, Leeds on 12th October. ("The Lock In" is the new name for "Time Gentlemen Please"). Billed as 'The UK' s No.1 Folk and Hip Hop Dance  Extravaganza', the show is on a nationwide tour, getting rave reviews wherever it goes. For details, visitwww.thelockindanceshow.co.uk <http://www.thelockindanceshow.co.uk/> .

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.

October 22 2012 SUPPLEMENT

Hello all,

Karl Dallas has asked me to forward the following to you. Hope to see you on November 1st

Best wishes
Tony Charnock
Topic Folk Club

Dear All:

As already advised, we are devoting the November 1 Singers and Musicians Night to a celebration of the life and music of Alex Eaton, who founded the Topic.

As someone who knew Alex since his pre-Topic days, I have been honoured to be invited to MC this night. I thought it would be nice if we tried to sing some of the songs Alex particularly loved.

Here is a list of the songs Alex loved taken from the commemorative CD distributed at his funeral:

It Makes No Difference Now
A Cowboy's Life
Joyeux Enfants de La Bourgogne
Le Cantonnier
Hardi Camarades
Girofle, Girofla
Jugend Erwach'
Die Arbeiter von Wien
Los Cuattros Generales
Banks of Marble
Dese Bones
Barbara Allen (British and American versions)
Dink's Song
Another Man Dun Gone
Lonesome Valley
Everywhere I look Dis Mornin'
It Ain't No Mo' Cane on Dis Brazos
Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
Joe Hill
Band of Working Men
Now I'm Leaving You Carlton
Time To Be Happy is Now
The Blarney Stone
Glens of Sweet Mayo
The Boll Weevil
Sat'dy Night & Sunday Too
The Flash Stockman
Say Farewell & We Gone
The `Ouses in Between
Wisht I Was a Rock
A Lover and His Lass
O Mistress Mine

Incidentally, the song The Time to be Happy Is Now, was played at Alex's funeral, and it would be good if we all sang it at the end. You can hear/see it on YouTube (in a rather naff kids' version, I' afraid) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoQ0HyXA82Y.

The words go:

The time to be happy is now
The place to be happy is here
And the way to be happy
Is to make someone happy
And we'll have a little heaven right here

Karl
