TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX

Newsletter No. 129 – February 2013

Hello again everyone.

The snows have gone (for now) - what has the shortest month got in store for Topic audiences this year? Pop down and see for yourselves. But hurry, it is only a short month!

7th February
Singers and musicians.
8.15 pm start. Free entry.

14th February
Plumhall

For those not familiar with this talented local duo, Nick Hall is one half of the popular and long-standing Hall Brothers who have appeared at the Topic on several occasions over the many years they have been performing together. Michelle is a former member of Waking the Witch and Chumbawumba. The duo perform regularly throughout the UK, and Nick recently toured South Africa with the band Magna Carta. Together  Nick and Michelle perform their own songs, with their sometimes wistful take on issues that affect us all, as well as well-chosen covers. Always entertaining. n5/6

21st February
Louise Jordan

Louise Jordan is a young singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist rapidly making an impact on the UK acoustic music scene. She plays guitar, piano and cello, but it’s her voice which is most often celebrated as the pinnacle of her trademark sound: captivating, powerful and evocative. Her songs have been described as bold in their honesty, haunting in their simplicity, her musical arrangements as instinctive. Louise has toured extensively, appearing alongside such luminaries as Eliza Carthy, Phil Beer, Cara Dillon and Kris Drever. She has two CD’s to her credit and her songs have received airings on national radio. 5/6

28th February
Jez Lowe
Jez Lowe has a huge reputation as a songwriter and performer in the world of acoustic music, with more than a dozen albums  to his name and countless appearances at prestigious venues and festivals all over the world. His songwriting remains of consistently high quality: his involvement in the BBC’s Radio Ballads have produced songs that have already become widely sung folk classics, e.g. Taking on Men. Regarded as something of an ambassador for the North East of England, Jez’s music is testament to the fact that he has never left his roots behind. To see Jez live, either solo or with his band, The Bad Pennies, is to witness the complete performance: expert musicianship, songs of compassion, comment, wit and humour, bound together by total rapport with his audience. 5/6

Coming in March: Ray Hearne, Michael J.Tinker, Gavin Davenport & Tom Kitching

More details in the next newsletter or see http://www.topic-folk-club.org.uk <http://www.topic-folk-club.org.uk/>

If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just 5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.

It only remains for me to wish everybody a very happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.
