TOPIC FOLK CLUB, BRADFORD

At the Bradford Irish Club, Rebecca Street, BD1 2RX

Newsletter No 134 - July 2013

Hello again everyone,

Summer holidays , festivals, lazy hazy days are looming, but before you make your getaway, get down to the Topic for a month of Thursdays so packed with talent you'll wonder why you ever need to book that holiday.

4th July
Roger Sutcliffe

Blues supremo Roger needs very little in the way of introduction, having become something of a legend in his own lifetime. He comes to the Topic every summer, at his own request as near to the 4th of July as the Thursday night schedule will allow. This year marks the 50th year of Roger playing at the club, and by a remarkable stroke of fortune the 4th of July this year falls on a Thursday. So we have exceptionally moved the singers and musicians night this month to the second Thursday, in appreciation of Roger’s remarkable record and as a mark of gratitude for the many great nights he has given us over the years. He always attracts a good crowd: this year it will most likely be busier than usual, so it will be worth getting down early. 6/5

11th July   Singers and musicians. 8.15 pm start. Free entry. NB 2ND THURSDAY THIS MONTH

18th July
Paul Metsers

Paul is perhaps an unfamiliar face on the music scene these days, but he was well-known on the UK folk circuit during the 1980’s, appearing at clubs and festivals throughout the British Isles and releasing five critically acclaimed albums during that time. His song Farewell to the Gold, was made famous by Nic Jones, who included it on his iconic album Penguin Eggs. Paul, born in the Netherlands, emigrated to New Zealand in 1952 at the age of seven, eventually becoming involved in folk music there. He came to England in 1980, and, after an eventful decade, retired from performing in 1989. Now settled in Cumbria, Paul has recently made the odd appearance in folk clubs again, so we can consider ourselves very lucky to have him appear at the Topic, a real treat from the past. 6/5

25th July
Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar

It has been an amazing year for these two young and very talented musicians. Virtually unknown when they came to the Topic in April last year, they now have a very full diary of folk clubs and festivals, including Cambridge and Cropredy, since winning the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award against formidable competition. Greg delivers songs, traditional and self-penned, with great maturity accompanying  himself more than competently on guitar, bouzouki and English concertina. Ciaran is a stunning fiddle player, either playing tunes or accompanying Greg, and also plays guitar and bouzouki, occasionally adding vocals. He was in the popular band Tri and has been All-Ireland and All-Britain fiddle champion. 2012 saw the issue of the duo’s debut CD The Queen’s Lover to great  acclaim, with another CD planned for next year. Catch these exceptional performers now: they are going to be very big on the folk scene in years to come. 6/5

And looking ahead...

The club doesn't close for the summer: there will be a singers and musicians' night every Thursday during August, so if you're at a loose end and want to keep your vocal chords oiled or your fingers nimble the Irish Club is the best place to do it. Expect slightly smaller but even more appreciative audiences.

Shuttle Shuffle Festival
This event will take place at the Factory Street Studios over the weekend of 17th/18th August. Many friends of the club will be appearing on the Topic's own acoustic stage, so make a note in your diaries. If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just 5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
