Newsletter No 133 - June 2013

Hello again everyone,

Nearly halfway through 2013 already, and summer barely arrived. But whether the sun’s streaming down or the rain’s pouring down, have a look at the talent that will be pouring into the Topic over the next month. Google, then goggle at, the artists who are coming to entertain us:

6th June
Singers and musicians. 8.15 pm start. Free entry.

13th June
Bob Fox

One of the leading champions of the North East’s great musical heritage, alongside the likes of Jez Lowe, Billy Mitchell and Benny Graham, Bob Fox has been a professional folk musician since 1975. With his superb distinctive voice and a highly individual guitar technique he has performed in many parts of the world, both solo and in different combinations. Recently he completed an 18 month stint performing as "Songman" in the National Theatre’s West End production of Michael Morpurgo’s Warhorse to great acclaim. Bob’s appearance tonight is in fact the gig he had to postpone when he took on the part. Expect one or two songs from the show. 6/

This event is part of the Bradford Fringe Festival.

20th June
Hut People

Sam Pirt (accordion) and Gary Hammond (percussion) make up this extraordinary and hugely entertaining duo, voted No.1 at the Musicport festival 2 years running. They play a mixture of homegrown, British, Nordic and European folk music. Sam is a highly experienced musician, well established on the folk circuit, having played around Europe in various combinations, as well as with Kathryn Tickell, the Dubliners, Sharon Shannon, Jez Lowe, to name but a few. He is also a member of the band 422, BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners.

Gary has recorded and toured the world as a member of Beautiful South: he is a most creative percussionist with over 400 instruments to his name. As a duo Hut People were winners of the best instrumental album in the Fatea 2012 Awards. Together with their first-class musicianship, humorous patter and Gary’s informative introduction to his various exotic percussion instruments, this, like their last visit to the club, will be a night to remember. 6/5

27th June
Andy Hill

Our sole local act this month, Andy  Hill, “The Bard of Earby”, has risen through the ranks at the Topic: Featured Support, Double Header and finally Top of the Bill! This Singer-Songwriter from the Yorkshire-Lancashire border will take you on an emotional roller-coaster with his own beautifully crafted songs of social comment, love and life, interspersed with his award winning Comic Songs which may have you laughing uncontrollably.

Andy re-launched himself back onto the Folk scene in 2004 and has steadily built a reputation and following across the North with his voice, guitar and ready wit. He has performed on BBC Radio Lancashire and BBC Radio York as well as local radio and has won the Ingleton Folk Festival Comic Song Contest several times with self-penned songs which feature dogs, cross dressing salesmen, car parks and Dog Oil! 6/5

The purpose of running this event is to try to bring something new to those interested in what is the broad spectrum of folk music: it also allows the club to step outside its comfort zone of just running club nights. If it's successful, we'll hopefully be able to host more different events in the future. So we hope we will get plenty of support. Please tell your friends about it.

Non-Topic News

A new free festival, the 1st Calverley Folk Day will be taking place on Saturday 8th June, from 1 pm until late. There will be singarounds and sessions in the pubs and clubs around the village: special guests and Topic favourites Jon Palmer with his Acoustic Band will be performing at The New Inn in the evening. All events are free, visit www.calverleyfolkday.wordpress.com <http://www.calverleyfolkday.wordpress.com/>  for details. The more support events like this receive, the healthier will be our local acoustic music scene.

Shuttle Shuffle Festival

This event will take place at the Factory Street Studios over the weekend of 17th/18th August. Many friends of the club will be appearing on the Topic's own acoustic stage, so make a note in your diaries. More information in the next issue, or google “Shuttle Shuffle Festival” for details. A proper website is being set up as we speak.

-------

If you would like to become a member of the Topic Folk Club, it costs just 5.00 per year, running from 1st January. Being a member entitles you to the lower ticket prices shown in this newsletter, as well as the chance to become more involved in the workings of the club if you would like to.

If you’re visiting the club for the first time, be sure to come and say hello, and if anyone has any suggestions for the club, for example if you would like us to try to book a particular artist, we’d like to hear them.

The Topic runs on Thursdays at the BRADFORD IRISH CLUB.  8.30pm start. (Singers & Musicians nights start at 8.15pm). Like all the clubs in the area, our aim is to provide good quality live entertainment to suit all tastes of those interested in folk music, and we thank you for your continued support.

Floor singers are always welcome, especially in the first half. Please try to get there by 8.15pm if you’d like a slot – it helps the MC to plan the evening.
